With the World Championship looming, the burning question is whether Mark Cavendish can cap his superb season with the rainbow jersey or not. Yesterday’s Stage 3 of Tour of Britain shed some light on Cav’s condition and partially revealed the truth. The stage had an uphill finish with a couple of sweeping left/right handers thrown in for good measure. The profile was not exactly a copy of the World Champ course in Denmark but the finish was similar.
(Notice the different scale)
Mark Renshaw had an off day at the race and missed the final selection of the riders vying for the win. But Cav even without his leadout man did a decent job and hung on to Michael Matthews’ wheel but it was Lars Boom who opened the sprint and took the win. The result immediately begs the question whether Cav can do it at the Worlds. It will be important that Britain forms a decent train before the finish and someone, possibly Geraint Thomas delivers Cav to the finish. It’s all speculation right now and we will only get to know the real story at the day of the race but it’s definitely going to be an exciting finish to the race and Cav’s season.
